With more than 91% of organizations now supporting work-from-home, and an astounding 72% of employees now working remotely, video conferencing has become an integral part of supporting the virtual workplace. According to Nemertes’ Visual Communications and Collaboration: 2020-21 Research Study, more than 91% of participating companies now use video conferencing, with nearly half obtaining a new conferencing/meeting service since March.
Achieving video conferencing success for home workers requires ensuring that they have both adequate performance and capabilities, and it requires management and analytics to enable IT to obtain operational insight. Here are ten steps that organizations should take to properly equip the home office for video:
- Implement a video-first culture that requires the use of video conferencing for all meetings. Only by mandating video can businesses achieve the full value of their investments
- Treat video as a critical service ensuring uptime, performance, and reliability
- Address the home office to ensure adequate Wi-Fi, bandwidth, security, funding, and application prioritization. IT can no longer treat the home office as outside of its control
- Provision necessary, and high-quality hardware such as webcams, headsets, speakerphones, and lighting to enable high-quality experiences
- Extend IT management into the home office, obtaining visibility into voice and video performance
- Provide guidance for home office setup to include lighting and backgrounds, as well as guidance for dress. Take advantage as well of interactive capabilities such as polls and games to create engaging experiences
- Accelerate your shift to the cloud to avoid issues related to using VPNs to backhaul video traffic onto the enterprise network
- Upgrade the office network as necessary for those returning to ensure that they too can participate in high-quality conferences from their desks or meeting spaces
- Invest in management and analytics tools that provide insight into performance and utilization and that simplify and automate provisioning
- Use video to support a community culture including frequent check-ins with employees, happy hours, training, and other social bonding activities
The new reality is that most home workers will not return to the same pre-pandemic work-place any time soon. Leverage video conferencing to enable high-quality engagements, for both internal and external meetings.
