August 14, 2024 – Twilio has announced the addition of two new interaction channels for its communications API portfolio: WhatsApp Business Calling API, for Twilio Programmable Voice; and Rich Communication Services (RCS), for the Twilio Messaging API. With WhatsApp Business Calling API, available in private beta, companies will be able to support voice calling natively in WhatsApp chat, enabling their customers to escalate from messaging to voice as needed. With this RCS enhancement, Twilio rounds out its Messaging API (which already includes MMS, SMS, and WhatsApp) with the ability to support rich, branded messaging. RCS in the Messaging API is in pilot; Twilio already offers RCS for Verify, its multichannel authentication API. Twilio announced the new communications APIs, along with AI and other enhancements for its Segment customer data platform, at its SIGNAL customer and developer event in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
